On Monday March 29, Trade Minister Tim Groser signed the New Zealand Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership (CEP) agreement. This agreement is a significant achievement that will further strengthen the economic links between New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region.

It breaks new ground for Hong Kong, with the agreement being the first of its type for Hong Kong, outside of their agreement with mainland China. For New Zealand the agreement adds to an ever increasing list of high quality and comprehensive FTAs. The CEP agreement with Hong Kong will complement the FTA with China nicely due to the role Hong Kong plays as a regional shipping and investment hub.
The CEP is expected to enter into force in late 2010 following completion of the requisite domestic implementation procedures in both economies.
